History of the Byrd Alzheimer's Institute
The Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer's Center & Research Institute was built on the vision of former Speaker of the House, Johnnie Byrd, Jr. whose father suffered from the disease. Mr. Byrd and his family knew the pain and struggles of a family caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease.
Preparing for his two years as Speaker, Mr. Byrd met with leading scientists and asked "what can we do to cure Alzheimer's?" The answer was clear: "research." Armed with this direction, Speaker Byrd led the effort to create a state of the art research institute that would support excellent basic and applied research into Alzheimer' disease.
The Legislature endorsed Mr. Byrd's vision of unified, collaborative, ground-breaking research until One Day, a Cure®; and provided funding to build a research facility and in 2004 created a dedicated funding source for the on-going work of the Institute.
