TAMPA – Mayor Pam Iorio will dedicate the week of Feb. 3-9, 2008 as Alzheimer’s Awareness Week. The proclamation is set to coincide with the Roses in Winter Gala, an event benefiting the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute on Feb. 7 and featuring former Miss America and sportscaster Phyllis George.

Awareness of Alzheimer’s disease is particularly important in Florida, with its high proportion of residents over 65. Nationwide, Alzheimer’s affects 4.5 million Americans and costs the U.S. economy $100 billion a year, $10 billion in Florida.
