Driving Awareness by Teeing Off the Green: Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute Hosts First Annual Golf Tournament
05.18.07

TAMPA – The Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr., Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute hosts its First Annual Golf Tournament, Friday, June 1, 2007 at the TPC Tampa Bay.

The Institute’s first annual golf tournament hopes to score a hole-in-one by raising funds to complete the building of the newly constructed, state-of-the-art, research facility on the campus of the University of South Florida, opening this summer.

This golf tournament not only raises awareness on the importance of Alzheimer’s research, but takes us one step closer to helping find a cure. We want to erase Alzheimer’s in all of our memories," says Kelleigh Klein, Byrd Institute Fundraising Liaison.

"Golf is a perfect match for Alzheimer’s research: it is a game of mental and physical fitness," CEO and Scientific Director Huntington Potter, Ph.D. added. "We know that exercise, social activities, and mental challenges all work to prevent the disease. I know we will have all of that at TPC.'"

The mission of the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute is to prevent and cure Alzheimer’s disease. Created in 2002 by the Florida Legislature, the Institute is dedicated to supporting and coordinating the tremendous research, expertise, and creative vision of scientific professionals all over Florida.

"We only hope our contribution puts a divot in the much needed funding to cure Alzheimer’s and our participation continues in building the future," says Barry Cole of Turner Construction.

The Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, housed on the campus of the University of South Florida, is as much an intellectual consortium as it is a bricks-and-mortar facility. The Byrd Alzheimer's Institute is dedicated to supporting and coordinating the tremendous research, expertise, experience, and creative vision of medical professionals throughout Florida. The Byrd Alzheimer's Institute is building cooperative relationships with national and international scientists that will move research results faster into clinical applications to delay onset, slow and, ideally, halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Collaborators include scientists, medical doctors and caregivers, health care providers, educators, advocates, volunteers, and civic leaders. Every individual who teaches, speaks out, provides care of dollars on the subject is a partner in the effort. Floridians are the first beneficiaries of the world-class Institute due to the early access to promising new treatments. For more information, visit www.ByrdInstitute.org
