Byrd Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute Awards $1.2 Million In Research Grants
Institute promotes collaborative effort towards finding a cure
09.27.07

TAMPA – The Byrd Alzheimer’s Center & Research Institute has awarded $1.2 million in research grants to scientists across the state of Florida. The grants are part of the Institute’s mission to promote a collaborative approach to research in discovering a cure for Alzheimer’s. Researchers at the Institute are working with scientists around the world in an effort to expedite the process of taking scientific discoveries from the laboratory to the clinic.

“We are proud of the panel of distinguished experts who are working together to find a cure,” said Dr. Huntington Potter, CEO and scientific director of the Byrd Institute. “It is this type of collaborative effort that will enable us to fulfill our mission: to find new treatments for Alzheimer’s by conducting and supporting world-class science and cutting-edge research studies.”

In the fight against Alzheimer's disease, good ideas often need assistance to grow, which is why the Institute provides grant money for research projects of great promise. After an extensive review process by Alzheimer's experts from outside Florida, the Institute this year has awarded grants totaling $1.2 million to 19 new projects.

Through this collaborative effort between researchers and scientists, the Institute has been able to publish more than 63 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

The Institute, also designated as a Center of Excellence by the Florida Legislature, encourages research that will most quickly lead to new treatments. The expectation is that the results generated from the Institute’s initial support will lead to further funding from national agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. Florida scientists have already received more than $11 million in new funding resulting from the Byrd Institute’s grant program.

The 2007 grant recipients are:

  • “A Pilot Randomized Intervention Study of Physical Exercise and Social Engagement," PI: Mortimer, James A., Ph.D., University of South Florida
