TAMPA – The Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr. Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute, along with a group of Tampa area sponsors want to help friends and loved ones of people living with Alzheimer's get their day started and maybe take a few steps toward preventing Alzheimer's.
On Saturday Nov. 11, the Byrd Institute will host a Brew for Your Brain's Sake Coffee and Tea Party for Caregivers and Loved Ones of People Living with Alzheimer's. The event at Arden Courts Alzheimer's Assisted Living will introduce the benefits of coffee, green tea, and mental exercises in the fight against Alzheimer's.
Byrd Institute researchers have found that caffeine and components in green tea delay the onset of Alzheimer's in mice. Also, Byrd Institute researchers have found that mental activities also delay Alzheimer's. These activities are as simple and enjoyable as working crossword puzzles or playing other challenging games.
"The Byrd Institute is committed to finding ways to help individuals stay healthy. What better way to do that than through enjoyable activities? Drinking coffee, green tea and playing games is something many of us enjoy. These activities are fun, they allow for social interaction and we believe they are good for you,'' said Huntington Potter, Ph.D and lead scientist.
Speakers at the event are Linda Cortese, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, and Huntington Potter, Ph.D., Byrd Institute.
Joining the Byrd Institute in sponsoring the event is The Coffee Beanery, Arden Courts, and The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. The Coffee Beanery will supply coffee, tea and snacks.
"It's a honor to work with these excellent organizations. They donate their time, resources and support to helping individuals with Alzheimer's," said Melanie Meyer, chief of external affairs. "Every single day the Tampa Bay area and the state of Florida show their support for Alzheimer's research and for people living with Alzheimer's and their families. All of us appreciate that commitment."
The Brew for Your Brain's Sake Coffee and Tea Party for Caregivers and Alzheimer's Loved Ones will be from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday Nov. 11. Arden Courts will provide daycare for the event. Arden Courts Alzheimer's Assisted Living is located at 14950 Casey Road.
