The Byrd Alzheimer's Research Center has begun the work of its mission to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. In January 2004 the institute awarded 16 doctors, representing research and educational institutions from around the state, with over $1.8 million in grants to further ongoing research on Alzheimer's disease.
The grants were awarded to each recipient based on a criteria system developed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The NIH system includes criteria in the following categories: multi-disciplinary, significance to treatment or diagnosis, translational, innovation, environment and approach. The grant recipients were selected by a panel of researchers from around Florida, which scored each grant proposal using the NIH criteria system.
This was the first official act of honoring researchers and is one step in a long journey to work towards the cure for Alzheimer's disease, which currently affects four million people in this country, many of whom live full time or part time in Florida
The Byrd Alzheimer's Research Center Institute, once completed, will be the largest freestanding institute in the world devoted exclusively to the understanding and development of a cure for Alzheimer's.
